Jailer 2 Review: Rajinikanth's Star Power Drives a Familiar but Entertaining Sequel

Jailer 2

Jailer 2
, the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, released in theatres on October 15, 2026. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film brings back Rajinikanth as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Critics have received the sequel with mixed but largely positive reactions, praising Rajinikanth's screen presence while noting a familiar storyline.

The film picks up three months after the events of the first part. Muthuvel is living quietly with his family while working as a supermarket supervisor. A criminal syndicate, led by Dileep (Suraj Venjaramoodu), is hunting for the man who killed their associate Varman. The search pulls Muthuvel back into the underworld he tried to leave behind.

A Familiar Return for Tiger

Nelson Dilipkumar follows the template of the first film closely. The sequel is described by several reviewers as both a remake and a sequel. The New Indian Express called it a requel, noting that it starts strong but ends up rehashing the first part.

The first half leans heavily on dark comedy. Rajinikanth's deadpan expressions pair with Yogi Babu's poker-faced timing and Namo Narayana's loud energy as the rowdy Moorthi. Mathrubhumi reported that the comedy scenes are a highlight and that the film is easily the most entertaining in its first half.

Rajinikanth Commands the Screen

Rajinikanth remains the central attraction. Pinkvilla gave the film 4 out of 5 stars and said his swag, comic timing and mass moments drive the experience. The review added that even a flick of his spectacles can evoke cheers from the audience.

Suraj Venjaramoodu is widely praised for his performance as Dileep. The New Indian Express wrote that he brings a lot of menace and draws from his comedy background. Namo Narayana also emerged as a standout, with reviewers noting that he steals several scenes in the first half.

A Packed Cast and an Uneven Second Half

The film introduces a large ensemble. Vidya Balan makes her Tamil debut as Kaantha, while SJ Suryah plays Bodhi Kalpak and Mithun Chakraborty appears as the family patriarch Chakri Kalpak. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan make cameo appearances.

Critics widely agree that the second half loses momentum. Deccan Chronicle, which gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, wrote that the narrative soon loses direction and that the villain track fails to blend naturally into the larger story. Several reviewers noted that many new characters do not get enough screen time to develop.

Box Office Opening and Fan Reactions

Jailer 2 opened strongly at the box office. According to Sacnilk, the film collected a net of Rs 59.70 crore in India on day one across 16,599 shows. The Tamil version contributed Rs 43.35 crore, followed by Telugu with Rs 12.50 crore. The worldwide gross on day one reached Rs 125.25 crore.

Fan reactions on social media were enthusiastic. One user wrote on X that Rajini's screen presence is on another level and that the mass elevation scenes are pure goosebumps. Actor Dhanush also shared his reaction, calling the film a must watch.

Critical Reception Divided

Reviews ranged from high praise to sharp criticism. The Hindu said Nelson betters the Jailer template with a well-calibrated sequel that knows when to let Rajini loose. The Hindu added that riotous humour fills the in-between stretches.

Deccan Chronicle offered a harsher view, stating that the sequel fails to recreate the magic and emerges as a largely forced and substance-less entertainer. The review added that Rajinikanth's star power alone cannot compensate for the lack of a strong script.

The News Minute wrote that the sequel feels like a tiring repetition with more explosions and bigger guns. Mathrubhumi, however, concluded that the film is not perfect but delivers what it promises, giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

As of October 16, 2026, Jailer 2 continues its theatrical run across multiple languages. The film has a runtime of 165 minutes and carries a U/A 16+ certificate. Amazon Prime Video has acquired the digital streaming rights, with an expected debut after a four-week window.
